eShram – One Stop Solution

Context:

Recently, the Union Minister of Labour & Employment launched “eShram – One Stop Solution” for the welfare of unorganized workers.

eShram – One Stop Solution will provide seamless access to different Social Security Schemes to the unorganised workers who are registered on the eShram portal.

This platform will act as a bridge, connecting the workers to the numerous benefits offered by the government and making the registration process easier and more transparent.

It consolidates and integrates key welfare schemes such as the One Nation One Ration Card, MGNREGA, National Social Assistance Programme, National Career Service, Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan etc., to enable unorganized workers registered on eShram to access a wide range of welfare initiatives of government from a single platform. 

The eShram portal was launched by the Ministry of Labour & Employment in August 2021, and more than 30 crore workers have already registered themselves on eShram in a span of 3 years.

  • 12 schemes of different Central Ministries / Departments have already been integrated/ mapped with the eShram.

Unorganised Worker

The term unorganized worker has been defined under the Unorganized Workers' Social Security Act, 2008.

Unorganised worker means a home-based worker, self-employed worker or a wage worker in the unorganised sector and includes a worker in the organised sector who is not covered by any of the Acts mentioned in Schedule II to this Act. 

  • Schedule II includes the following Acts: 

1.

The Workmen's Compensation Act 1923

2.

The Industrial Disputes Act 1947

3.

The Employees' State Insurance Act 1948

4.

The Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952

5.

The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961

6.

The Payment of Gratuity Act 1972


Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing Museum of Valour

Context:

Union Defence Minister recently inaugurated the Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing Museum of Valour at Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

Ranenglao 'Bob' Khathing

  • He was born on February 28, 1912, in Manipur's Ukhrul district. 
  • He was a Tangkhul Naga- A tribe that lives mostly in the Indo- Myanmar- Border area occupying the Ukhrul District of Manipur.
  • In 1939, after the Second World War broke out, Khathing joined the Indian Army and got an Emergency Commission as an officer.
  • He was given the coveted award of Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his role in galvanising Naga support against the Japanese in Burma and India.
  • He was also instrumental in establishing essential military and security frameworks, such as the Sashastra Seema Bal, Nagaland Armed Police, and the Naga Regiment.
  • The legendary Bob Khathing led the expedition to peacefully integrate Tawang into India. 

Bob Khathing’s Tawang expedition 

  • In 1951, the Governor of Assam, Jairamdas Daulatram, asked Khathing (then a member of the Indian Frontier Administrative Service) to occupy Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, which was earlier claimed by China.
  • Bob Khathing started the expedition for Tawang on January 17, 1951, from the Lokhra Camp near Assam’s Charduar with troops of Assam Rifles. 
  • He officially took Tawang under Indian administration by hoisting the Indian flag on February 14, 1951.

Aradhana

Context:

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) recently hosted the mega cultural event ‘Aradhana’.

  • The event was held on 24th October 2024, at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC), New Delhi. 
  • The event highlights the role that elders play in preserving and passing down the country’s rich artistic heritage.
  • ‘Aradhana’ emphasized the traditional Indian values of the Guru Shishya Parampara, inter-generational solidarity, and the respect and care that senior citizens receive in Indian society. 
  • Through this celebration, the Ministry aims to foster a greater understanding of the cultural significance of ageing gracefully and the vital contributions that older adults make in preserving the traditions of art and culture. 

The Civil Registration System (CRS) Mobile Application

Context:

Recently, the Union Home Minister launched the Civil Registration System (CRS) mobile application for seamless and hassle-free registration of birth and death.

More on the News

  • This application is prepared by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.
  • This application will make registration of births and deaths seamless and hassle-free by allowing citizens to register at any time, from any place, and in their State’s official language.
  • Thus, it will significantly reduce the time required for registration of births and deaths.
  • According to the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, all reported births and deaths in the country occurring from October 1, 2023 are to be digitally registered through the Centre’s portal dc.crsorgi.gov.in 
  • The digital birth certificates will be a single document to prove the date of birth for various services such as admission to educational institutions, government jobs and marriage registration. 
  • The centralised database will also help update the National Population Register (NPR), ration cards, property registration and electoral rolls.

About Civil Registration System (CRS) 

  • CRS is a Continuous, Permanent and Systematic recording of births and deaths obtained under the Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969.
  • The RBD Act, 1969 provides for compulsory registration of births, deaths and still births within 21 days (from the date of occurrence) in all parts of the Country.
  • The registration within 21 days is free. However, registration beyond the required period can be made after payment of the prescribed fee and upon approval from the prescribed authority.
  • Offences under this Act are civil in nature.
