Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) – Quarterly Bulletin [Oct – Dec 2024]

Context: 

Recently, the National Statistics Office (NSO) released the quarterly bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for October-December 2024.

More on the News:

  • The present Quarterly Bulletin is the twenty-fifth in the series for the quarter of October – December 2024.
  • In these quarterly bulletin estimates, the following labour force indicators are presented: - LFPR; WPR; UR; and CWS. 

Key Findings of Quarterly Bulletin (October – December 2024):

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in urban areas was 50.4% for persons aged 15 years in above. 

  • For male it was 75.4%, and for female, it was 25.2%.

Worker Population Ratio (WPR) in urban areas was 47.2% for persons of age 15 years in above. 

  • For male, it was 70.9%, for females, it was 23.2%.

The unemployment rate (UR) in urban areas among persons aged 15 years and above decreased from 6.5% to 6.4%.

  • For males, UR was 5.8% and for females, UR was 8.1%.The trend in Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 years and above since 2022: -

About Periodic Labour Force Survey:

Considering the importance of the availability of labour force data at more frequent time intervals, the National Statistical Office (NSO) launched the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) in April 2017.

The objective of PLFS is primarily twofold: - 

  • To estimate the key employment and unemployment indicators (viz. Worker Population Ratio, Labour Force Participation Rate, Unemployment Rate) in the short time interval of three months for the urban areas only in the ‘Current Weekly Status’ (CWS).
  • To estimate employment and unemployment indicators in both usual Status and CWS in both rural and urban areas annually.
