Lucknow Achieved 100% Scientific Processing of Solid Waste
Context: Recently, Lucknow became the first city in Uttar Pradesh to achieve 100% scientific processing of municipal solid waste.
More on the News
- The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has addressed it through a multi-pronged strategy focused on scientific waste disposal, resource recovery, and sustainable urban development, enhancing both public health and environmental quality.
- Lucknow inaugurated its third fresh waste processing facility at Shivari Plant, which helped in becoming the first city in Uttar Pradesh to achieve 100% and, earning the distinction of a ‘zero fresh waste dump’ city.
- From 18.5 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste, around 12.86 lakh metric tonnes has been scientifically processed.
- Over 25 acres of land at Shivari have been reclaimed and transformed into a fully functional waste treatment facility with windrow pads, internal roads, sheds, weighbridges, and a complete processing ecosystem.
Key Components of the 100% Processing Model
• Achieving this target requires an integrated system of collection, segregation, and diverse processing technologies:
• Mechanised Segregation: Waste is split into organic (approx. 55%) and inorganic (approx. 45%) fractions using automated sorting plants.
• Organic Waste Processing:
- Composting & Vermicomposting: Converting biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich organic fertiliser.
- Biomethanation: Generating biogas and electricity from food and sewage waste.
• Inorganic Waste Processing:
- Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF): Non-recyclable inorganic waste is converted into fuel pellets for high-heat industries like cement and paper manufacturing.
- Recycling: Plastics, glass, and metals are recovered and sent back into the production cycle. High-capacity plants use thermal technologies (incineration, gasification, or pyrolysis) to convert residual waste into electricity and steam.
• Waste-to-Energy (WtE): High-capacity plants use thermal technologies (incineration, gasification, or pyrolysis) to convert residual waste into electricity and steam.
