‘One Nation-One Port’ and other initiatives launched

Context:

Recently, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways launched the “One Nation-One Port Process (ONOP),” an initiative to standardize and streamline operations across India’s major ports.

About ONOP:

A groundbreaking initiative aimed at removing inefficiencies and creating a unified system across India’s major ports.

By standardizing paperwork and simplifying processes, ONOP is expected to:

  • Reduce delays in port operations by ensuring the same procedures are followed everywhere.
  • Lower logistics costs by improving workflow and removing unnecessary steps.
  • Improve India’s position in global trade by aligning port operations with international standards.

This initiative is key to making India a top maritime hub, boosting economic growth, and strengthening the country's trade infrastructure.

Other Initiatives Launched:

  • The Minister also launched Sagar Ankalan — the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for FY 2023-24 as a significant step towards enhancing efficiency and global competitiveness in India’s maritime sector.
  • The minister also introduced the Bharat Global Ports Consortium to bolster global trade by expanding India’s maritime connectivity and enhancing the resilience of international trade.
  • The MAITRI (Master Application for International Trade and Regulatory Interface) was also launched to simplify trade processes, minimize bureaucratic inefficiencies, and speed up clearances.
  • The Minister also announced that the India Maritime Week will be held from 27th to 31st of October 2025 in Mumbai to celebrate country’s ‘Maritime Virasat’ and ‘Maritime Vikaas’ — a bi-annual global maritime gathering
  • The Minister also launched the National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) website.
  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), launched the ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue’ as an annual dialogue to center-stage India as the global venue for all strategic maritime conversations.

About Sagar Ankalan — the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI):

Sagar Ankalan LPPI aims to benchmark port performance, drive operational excellence, and strengthen India's trade connectivity.

The LPPI will evaluate all major and non-major ports under Bulk (Dry & Liquid) and Container categories.

This index is created to measure and improve port performance by looking at key factors like:

  • Efficiency in handling cargo
  • Time taken for ships to turn around at ports
  • Berth Idle time at the docks, container dwell time, and ship berth-day output.

The LPPI will offer valuable insights to improve logistics and trade connections, helping India continue to climb in global rankings.

  • India’s recent jump to 22nd place (from 44th) in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) 2023 for “International Shipments” shows the country’s rapid progress in maritime logistics.
