India has featured among the top three countries, accounting for 12 per cent of new 'romance scams' profiles opened in 2024, according to a Moody's report, with over three-fourths of Indians encountering fake profiles and Al-generated photos on dating websites, apps and social media. In a recent survey, McAfee, an online protection and services solution provider, found that 77 per cent of Indians said they had come across fake profiles and/or photos that look Al-generated on dating websites or apps, or on social me-dia. It had looked at the new dimension of artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools that may have added to romance scams, surveying 7,000 people in seven countries worldwide, including India. Romance frauds often take place through dating apps, but fraudsters may also contact potential victims through social media, according to a 2021 advisory of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Underlining that the Indo-Pacific has been witnessing "deeper tensions and sharper contestations", External Affairs minister S Jaishankar, referring to China's aggressive behaviour in the region, said that "stronger assertions of interests" is one issue while concerns about "unilateral changes to the status quo" is another. Jaishankar's remarks came at the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat on 'Voyage to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership'.

The lives of at least 18 people have been snuffed out in the second Kumbh-related tragedy in less than three weeks. Railway officials have attributed the calamitous stampede at New Delhi Railway Station to a combination of factors - the delay of two trains, an inordinate number of travellers waiting on one platform, an announcement of a special train, which led to a crowd surging towards the ill-fated area. In 2013, a study published in the International Journal of Stampede Reduction pointed out that religious gatherings and pilgrimages account for nearly 80 per cent of the stampedes in the country. That year, a stampede at the Allahabad (now Prayagraj) Railway Station during Kumbh claimed 42 lives. Since then, the National Disaster Management Authority has framed detailed guidelines for crowd management. Yet, authorities at large congregations do not always act promptly to ensure that crowds keep moving calmly. In recent years, experts have advocated the use of technology -drones, for instance - to help law enforcers and event organisers to monitor crowd density and swiftly identify any source of pressure or disturbance.

Elon Musk, earlier in the day, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for personal business or as a representative of the US government, President Donald Trump said it could well be for his companies. He also immediately added that it was very difficult to do business in India, especially because of tariffs. The day also ended on a business note. After the summit meeting, both Trump and Modi spelled out a list of interstate business deals. No flourish of high principles impeded the flow of business. No "defining relationship of the century", as Barack Obama would often say. Last year, the value of US-India trade was $192 billion. India's exports to the US, both goods and services, were worth $119 billion and imports worth $73 billion, leading to a US trade deficit of $46 billion. India, of course, is not even among the top 10 trading partners of the US. Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union are the top four, trading goods and services worth be-tween $800 billion to $1.3 trillion.

The recently presented Budget for 2025-26 will go down as one that provided India's income tax payers meagre as their number is, relative to the size of the overall population - a massive relief, with the government taking a hit of Rs 1 lakh crore in revenues foregone. The new Bill, which is now being scrutinised by a select committee of Lok Sabha, intends to contemporise as well as simplify the existing statute that dates back to 1961. It is in line with the Narendra Modi government's move to abolish over 1,500 obsolete laws while updating and amending others. The new Bill is just half the length of the existing law as it cuts the total chapters from 47 to 23, even as it has more tables, sections and schedules. This has been made possible by omitting outdated provisions, restructuring related portions, and simplifying the language.

India's fruits and vegetables sector (F&V) is growing faster than cereals, contributing roughly 30 per cent to the value of crop agriculture. It is also more nutritious. Yet, it receives far less policy focus and institutional support compared to cereals. Without organised value chains, proper storage, or adequate processing facilities, the F&V sector remains highly vulnerable to seasonal gluts, price crashes, and post-harvest losses. The milk story is well known. The milk cooperatives under the leadership of Verghese Kurien changed India's milk land-scape from a highly deficit country to the world's largest producer of milk with 239 million tonnes, followed by the US at 103 million tonnes in 2023-24. More interesting is the fact that brands like AMUL claim that their milk farmers receive between 75 to 80 per cent of the consumer price. The success of Sahyadri Farms gives us a blueprint for scaling it up to the entire F&V sector. As of August 2024, the government of India has a target 10,000 FPOs, of which 8,875 FPOS have been successfully registered across the country. If India can scale up 10,000 high-impact FPOs like SFPCL, it could redefine the F&V sector, as was done in the milk sector. Sahyadri Farms could be the 'divadandi' (lighthouse), as AMUL was in the milk sector.

Soyabean oil imports saw a sharp 14-fold surge from neighbouring Nepal during the April to November period in 2024 compared to the previous year, even as Kathmandu remains a marginal producer of the commodity, an analysis of data from the Commerce and Industry Ministry has shown. This comes as overall soyabean oil imports in India are showing a rising trend, with a 19 per cent overall surge in the April to November 2024 period to nearly $3 billion compared to $2.5 billion in 2023. However, during the comparable period, Brazil - one of the top producers of the commodity - registered a drop in exports. Data suggests that there is over 30 per cent tariff advantage that Nepal enjoys.

Like several emerging markets, India also turned to sovereign green bonds to help fund its transition to a low-carbon economy, but investor demand remains weak. While green bonds help governments raise capital for clean energy and infrastructure, India's issues have struggled to secure a meaningful 'greenium'-lower borrowing costs typically associated with such bonds. Green bonds are debt instruments issued by governments, corporations, and multilateral banks to raise funds for projects that reduce emissions or enhance climate resilience. Issuers typically offer green bonds at lower yields than conventional bonds, assuring investors that the proceeds will be used exclusively for green investments. The difference in yield-known as the green premium, or gree-nium-determines the cost advantage of green bonds.

New production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes are set to given a quiet burial, with many of the existing ones are yet to produce satisfactory results. Instead, the government is working out the contours of new incentive schemes for a clutch of industries. These incentives will, however, be markedly different from PLI schemes in terms of structure and objectives, with a sharper focus on job creation and quality of products. The PLI policy was launched in 2021-22 to assist Indian companies to scale up and become large enough to compete globally. There are as many as 14 schemes at present, with the government seeking to offer Rs 1.95 lakh crore in incentives by FY30. However, the schemes' progress so far is barely par for the course.

The Chhattisgarh High Court in a key ruling recently said that marital rape immunity in law extended to Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), that criminalised "unnatural sex". Section 375, which criminalises rape, states that the provision does not extend to "sexual intercourse or sexual acts by a man with his own wife," when the wife has attained the age of majority. However, Section 377, which outlaws "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal", does not contain this exception as it was originally drafted to criminalise homosexuality. In its ruling, the HC pointed out that Section 375 of the IPC contained the marital rape exception under which a man could not be prosecuted for non-consensual sex with his wife who had attained the age of majority.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Union Budget announced the launch of the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDKY). ADP was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2018. The pro-gramme aimed to quickly and effectively transform 112 of the most under-developed districts across India, based on 3 Cs - Convergence (of central and state schemes), Collaboration (of central and state level nodal officers and District Collectors), and Competition (among districts through monthly delta ranking). PMDKY will cover 100 districts based on three broad parameters: low productivity, moderate crop intensity, and be-low-average credit parameters, Sithara-man said. According to sources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare has been collecting data on these parameters, based on which the districts will be identified.
